What We Do

Jeevan Rekha

Jeevan Rekha" (Lifeline) aims to uplift landless and marginal goat farmers by providing sustainable solutions to enhance their goat farming business. By improving breeding practices, reducing mortality, and ensuring better market access, the project will secure livelihoods and boost incomes. For resource-poor farmers struggling with financial instability, Jeevan Rekha will act as a crucial support system, transforming goat farming into a reliable source of prosperity. True to its name, this initiative will serve as a lifeline, empowering farmers to break free from poverty and build a brighter future.

Problem Statement

Goat farming in India faces major challenges, including poor breeding practices due to the scarcity of high-quality bucks and rampant inbreeding, leading to genetic degradation. High kid /adult goat mortality and lack of veterinary care, further reduces herd productivity. Unorganized value chain, weak market linkages, and middlemen exploitation result in low price realization for farmers. These issues collectively contribute to reduced productivity and income, hindering the growth of the goat farming sector.

Low productivity

Low productivity in terms of Carcass yield, milk yield and body weight due to genetic dilution of indigenous goat breeds.

Lack of superior Germplasm

The unavailability of high-quality semen and rising inbreeding in goat husbandry reduce productivity and farmers' income.

Missing Infrastructure

The lack of critical infrastructure, such as AI labs and modern breeding facilities, severely limits genetic improvement and productivity in goat farming

High goat mortality

lack of accessible and quality veterinary health services, which leads to high mortality rates, particularly among kids

Unorganized value chain and market linkage

High Gap in demand and supply in goat meat and lack of standardised value chain mechanism in goat husbandry.

Way Forward

Our Solutions

High productivity with superior germplasm

Promote selective breeding and establish breed conservation programs to enhance milk yield and body weight while preserving indigenous goat genetics.

Adoption on scalable solution of breeding

Expand AI services and farmer training to increase adoption of scientific breeding practices beyond the current 5-7%.

Infrastructure development

Invest in modern breeding infrastructure, including AI labs and upgraded farms, to boost genetic improvement and productivity in goat farming.

Reduce kid/goat mortality

Strengthen veterinary networks and mobile health units to reduce kid mortality and improve overall herd health.

Strengthening value chain and market linkage

Develop organized market linkages and standardized processing systems to bridge the demand-supply gap and improve value chain efficiency.
